Roxana of Roxana’s Home Baking blog hosted a decadent Wisconsin Cheese and wine party for her friends a few weeks ago, and – after the cheese was nibbled and wine sipped – she shared some excellent tips for hosting your own pairing party.
- Determine the number of guests
Once you have a head count, you can determine the right amount of cheese varieties to have on hand and how many bottles of wine you’ll need. You will want at least 1–2 ounces of each cheese variety per person attending.
- Skip the supermarket and head straight to the local cheese shop
A little expertise is helpful when choosing a good selection of cheeses. Have a minimum of three varieties for smaller parties, and a maximum of six or seven for larger parties so as not to overwhelm guests. The same goes for the wine options.
- As a rule of thumb, think variety
When choosing cheeses, start with one soft or creamy style, one hard or aged style and one blue variety. For larger parties, choose additional styles that will contrast the others for a diverse spread of textures and tastes.
- Gather a fun mix of charcuterie to accompany the pairings
Choose a selection of fresh and/or dried fruit, nuts, chutney and jams, salami and cured meats, olives, crackers and crusty bread.
