Calling all tailgaters – I’ve got an epic burger here for the football tailgating win: the French Onion Field Goal Cheeseburger, dripping with three layers of cheese and caramelized onions, tucked in between layers of a triple-decker burger. You whip up this burger for your friends at your next tailgating party, and let me tell you, by the end of the day, you’re going to have a LOT of friends. Here’s the key to my tailgating parties: everything has to be pretty epic – not just a hot dog and a bun, I’m talking knock-your-socks-off food that people go crazy over – and it has to be easy to make while you’re in the middle of a parking lot.
So what’s the secret? Everything has to be prepped ahead of time. With the exception of grilling the actual burgers, which you’ll be doing in that parking lot, all the toppings and sides are made at home.
You can’t just throw a burger on a bun for this tailgating party – we need a football burger here, one that lives up to game-day standards. And the French Onion Field Goal Cheeseburger does just that. It’s three layers of burger smothered with two types of Wisconsin cheese, and tastes just as satisfying as a game-winning 3-point field goal. And with caramelized onions on top, this cheeseburger has all the flavors of French onion soup.
And just like we all know the best part about French onion soup is all that cheese, it’s the same with this burger. The two different types of cheese make this burger unbelievably tasty, so definitely do not skimp on the cheese.
Now let’s talk for a minute about the bun here – we’re not using a plain old hamburger bun; we’ve got to go big or go home. So, similar to the croutons underneath all that cheese in your French onion soup, the bun here is two buttery, thick slices of Texas toast. Crunchy, cheesy, and glorious – this cheeseburger is definitely game-day worthy.
French Onion Field Goal Cheeseburger
Servings: 2 cheeseburgers
For the Caramelized Onions:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
5 large onions, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons Marsala wine
For the Cheeseburger:
4 slices store-bought Texas toast
1 package store-bought au jus for dipping, optional
6 4-ounce hamburger patties
6 thick slices Wisconsin baby swiss cheese
6 thick slices Wisconsin alpine-style cheese
For caramelized onions: Melt butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions, salt and pepper to skillet and toss to coat. Cook, stirring often, for 20-30 minutes until softened and browned. Stir in Marsala wine and cook for 2 additional minutes; remove from heat. Place onions in thermos or other insulated container to keep warm.
For cheeseburger: Before leaving home, warm Texas toast in oven according to package directions; cool. Store in storage bag or container.
Meanwhile, if using, make au jus according to package directions; store in thermos to keep warm. Pack burger patties and cheeses in chilled cooler until ready to grill.
To serve: Preheat grill. Grill patties 2 minutes per side; top each burger with 2 slices of each different type of cheese. Warm Texas toast on grill. When cheese is melted, remove patties and toast from grill. Place 1 patty on 1 piece of Texas toast. Top with large spoonful of caramelized onions. Repeat for 2 additional layers, ending with remaining onions on top. Close burgers with remaining 2 toast slices. Serve with dipping sauce, if desired.
