When it comes to easy holiday entertaining, nothing brings more comfort or joy than a well-crafted cheese board. We’re indulging in an extra special holiday board that features a sophisticated array of Wisconsin cheeses and accompaniments.

Cheese boards are perfectly utilitarian for the holiday season. This one is particularly easy to have prepared for hungry guests when they arrive. Or, serve it as an appetizer or post-dinner snack. Your guests—both young and old—will love picking and choosing combinations of Wisconsin cheese, fruits, meats, nuts and other accompaniments.

The key to any cheese board is VARIETY. We’ve chosen three distinctly different Wisconsin cheeses for this version. Wisconsin blue, and two specialty cheeses—Montamoré® and Rush Creek Reserve.

An American award-winner, Sartori’s Montamoré® cheese is a crowd pleaser. If you crossed parmesan with white cheddar, this addictive cheese would be the result. It boasts the sweet, fruity notes of parmesan, and the creaminess and tang of cheddar. If you can’t find it at your local grocer, substitute Wisconsin white cheddar cheese.

Rush Creek Reserve by Uplands Cheese is made only in the autumn from the milk of hay-fed cows. Wrapped in spruce bark, it has a sweet, woodsy flavor that’s intensely rich and beefy. If you can’t find Rush Creek Reserve, substitute a small wheel of Wisconsin brie or camembert.

The best way to eat your way through this board is to think in contrasting flavors. Blue cheese has an earthy, tangy bite, so adding a dose of sweetness (figs, grapes or honey) helps tame its strong flavor. Montamoré® cheese is creamy and sweet, so texture (pecans or crackers) and a savory element (olives or prosciutto) make it even more delicious. For a dessert-like pairing, try it with dark chocolate. Rush Creek Reserve is both delicate and complex in flavor. That means it can stand on its own or get scooped up with hearty wheat crackers.

  • Wisconsin blue cheese*
  • Sartori Montamoré® cheese (or substitute Wisconsin white cheddar)*
  • Uplands Cheese Rush Creek Reserve (or substitute Wisconsin brie or camembert)*
  • Wheat crackers
  • Fresh or fried figs, halved lengthwise
  • Pomegranate
  • Grapes
  • Olives
  • Cornichons
  • Prosciutto
  • Pecans
  • Dark chocolate
  • Honey
  • For garnish: fresh rosemary sprigs and cranberries

*If you’re serving this cheese board as an appetizer, estimate you’ll need 1-2 ounces of each cheese per person, and purchase accordingly.
