It’s the most wonderful time of the year: April is National Grilled Cheese month, the 2017 Grilled Cheese Recipe Showdown is underway, and today is National Grilled Cheese Day! We at the Grilled Cheese Academy and Wisconsin Cheese are celebrating by sharing a new downloadable recipe book featuring some of the tastiest sandwiches we’ve ever bitten into.

This year is the sixth year of the annual grilled cheese recipe showdown, which means we have five grand prize-winning sandwich recipes to look back on to inspire your own recipes all month long. The experts at the Grilled Cheese Academy have conducted an examination of what components make up a tasty grilled cheese sandwich and have shared a sample of their findings.

Grilled cheese greatness is not achieved with just any old slice of cheese and bread. Thoughtful preparation goes into the ingredient choice and grilling methods. We used The Birchwood to exemplify the different components of a delicious grilled cheese.

  • The Bread: Here we have buttered and browned whole-grain bread as the soft-but-hearty base. A thick-cut slice between 2-3 days old is ideal for best ingredient support.
  • The Wisconsin Cheese: An aged Wisconsin brick adds a boldly distinctive taste that’s balanced by rich Wisconsin cheddar. Both are sliced thick to create a gooey layer of mouth-watering cheese to pull all the ingredients together.
  • The Flavorful Additions: Sautéed mushrooms and onions with rosemary and thyme mix together to create a complex and earthy flavor that perfectly complements the Wisconsin brick and cheddar cheese varieties. And to top it all off, an over easy fried egg to add some extra protein and just a hint of runny yolk.
